Republic of Nynex debut at Megapolis Festival 2010

Hi Matt! This is more of a formality for your records: thanks for the
submission -- we'd like for you to be involved in Megapolis this year
in Baltimore, May 14-16.

My in-progress genetic audio art project, the Republic of Nynex, has been accepted as part of the Megapolis Festival in Baltimore in May of this year. This is a participatory project, so you can actually take part even without going to the festival.

I won't be putting all the detailed progress in this blog. If you want to follow the project along, you can subscribe to the progress blog on the site, become a Facebook fan, or follow nynexrepublic on Twitter or Soundcloud. Twitter will contain the only online announcements of each new generation, but if you want to listen and rate without becoming become a Twitter user you can subscribe to the Twitter RSS feed once the project goes live.

Capoeira Gerais Batizado - This Saturday!

I am late in posting this, but this week is the third Capoeira Gerais batizado in Boston.

Events are Thursday and Saturday in Marlboro and Friday night in Chinatown. See the poster for all details. You should not miss this. To paraphrase a friend who came to last year's: "I spent two hours alternately saying HOLY SHIT and WHOA. Those guys were unbelievable"

Test Pattern tonight - Iridite Productions

Tonight's Test Pattern will focus on Glasgow label Iridite Productions. From their press package:

"ItÂ�s all about the music"

Iridite was founded on this principle in the summer of 1999. Dedicated to producing quality electronic dance music, and acting as a platform for both established and new artists whose work was yet to be heard. This music would be unified not strictly by genre but by its quality, the styles ranging from down tempo to Detroit inspired Techno, Dub and House. Initially the aim was to bring together different artists on each release, each track being the strongest possible selection by that artist for the EP at that time, creating a fluid mix of high quality music without trying to hard to be overtly "eclectic".

From Matt:

I will be playing tracks from Iridite's entire 10-year history (well, most of it). If time permits, I will also present some unreleased, untitled tracks by unnamed artists coming up on future Iridite releases.

Assorted small updates, since it's been a while:

- Picked up some stuff at the Salem Record Exchange: Mr. G, Nitzer Ebb, King Crimson, Stewart Copeland, CTR, David Sylvian and Holger Czukay, SAW, Baby Ford, and DAF. Going through all the records strewn about my office. If I know what it sounds like, it goes back in the boxes, otherwise it gets played. Not all of my records are surviving this process. I will be selling some records on Craigslist soon, and for cheep.

- If you're a WZBC person reading this, I am still looking for people to do Test Pattern this summer. Contact me for more information. You can just leave a comment below if you like.

- Tomorrow is another grand cooking day. I have a 5 pound pork loin that will turn into pork chops and the magnificent apple-sausage stuffed pork loin, possibly on the grill if it doesn't rain. I am also making baked beans from scratch using the recipe from Peace, Love, and BBQ (minus the bacon). Although I would like the rain so I don't have to water the lawn (I won't bore you) I would love to finally get the chance to do some BBQ this summer for the first time since October!

- Baby is coming any day now. We've had a number of false alarms, but no actual baby yet, or there would have been an announcement.

- The next capoeira batizado is the weekend of September 24th.

Megapolis Festival and Other Notes

On the weekend of April 24th-26th, I will be volunteering at the Megapolis Audio Festival, in and around Harvard Square and the Elks Lodge in Central Square in Cambridge. This event features live performances, audio art installations, and workshops on such topics as circuit-bending, making your own contact mic. Weekend passes are $45 ($30 for students) with some workshops requiring RSVPs and/or materials fees. There are also tours of a mysterious nature (!) and an all-night audio slumber party (!!!)

On Friday May 8th, Contra Mestre Marquinho Coreba of Capoeira Gerais, my capoeira instructor will be performing a demonstration along with Instructor Morcego, Coehlo, and Fantama of Capoeira Luanda as part of a late addition to the program of the Voidstar Productions 2009 Multimedia Circus. My dad gave me most of a cut-up cherry tree and a pile of red oak! IT'S SMOKING SEASON as soon as I re-season the grates on my smoker.

I will post the final Octave One interview soon. I have been in total information chaos since that weekend and the CD with the final version has been in my desk at work for quite some time.

Special Guest this Friday

DJ Carl Schmidt will be appearing on the Hydrogen Economy this coming Friday. He'll be on at 11PM mixing some quality tunes. The demo mix he gave me was quite excellent, displaying a wide range of musical taste and excellent mixing skill.

Found and removed badware

Metropolis, and a Reminder

A complete version of the film Metropolis has been found in Argentina. Apparently the versions available today are missing 90 minutes of material.

Does this have anything to do with the music usually covered on this blog? You betcherass. Jeff Mills and Giorgio Moroder both created soundtracks for the silent film, the former going so far as to perform his soundtrack alongside a showing of the film (along with performances by Super Collider and Herbert!)

On a totally different note, I will be playing two sets at River Gods tomorrow night (July 3) as part of the monthly WZBC Countdown that was postponed from last month. Also appearing will be Matt Crook and John Straub. Unfortunately, the bar won't be open until 2AM, even though it's the day before a holiday, but there are other area events that will be open afterwards (If I am not totally cracked out I might head over to Elements for the last bit of KLUTE)

Stupid Celtics - River Gods Postponed

After discussion with the venue, the WZBC Countdown will NOT be occurring as planned tonight. From John S., the host:

Hey folks:

Tomorrow night is the first Thursday of the month, which is when WZBC
usually hosts a monthly countdown + 2 featured DJs at River Gods. But
tomorrow also happens to be game 1 of the NBA finals between the
Boston Celtics and the Los Angeles Lakers. River Gods doesn't usually
have a TV on in the bar, but they do make an exception when Boston
teams make it into championship games. So River Gods will be showing
the game an a big screen.

River Gods might mute the TV audio, in which case I will spin during
the game, and play WZBC's countdown as usual between 10 and 11 p.m. I
will also spin after the game.
River Gods might turn up the TV audio, in which case I will just play
a few songs - including the countdown songs - during the commercial
breaks. Either way, I will spin after the game is over.

Go Celtics!
